KID Museum is not a conventional museum, and it’s not only for kids. Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, KID Museum is a hub for hands-on learning that equips kids to invent the future. KID’s inventive curriculum and programs build sustained relationships with kids, their families and teachers to expand access to STEM and transformative learning experiences.
The Challenge
KID Museum enlisted 5e to provide an outsider’s assessment of their messaging and storytelling and fill a capacity gap during the absence of a senior leader dedicated to communications. KID was struggling to articulate its purpose, offerings and impact in a succinct and compelling way. They were also letting great stories go untold because their communications and marketing team was understaffed and without a leader.
The Solution
To get to know KID Museum and inform our messaging and strategic recommendations, 5e interviewed the organization’s leadership team, a cross-section of staff, board members, former employees and patrons. We also audited KID’s communications channels and products. The resulting work included:
- A messaging framework that simply conveyed how KID offers something for everyone
- Recommendations to bring focus to KID’s communications and a cadence for storytelling
- PR support for KID’s signature events and programs, which resulted in a section-front feature in the Washington Post, broadcast coverage on two local stations, and a live interview on DC’s FOX affiliate
- Collaboration with KID’s video contractor on short documentaries showcasing the museum’s programs and people
- Ghostwriting of a monthly column from KID’s executive director
- Program development and scripting for donor events
- Advice to KID’s social media manager on strategy and content creation
- Screening of applications and participation in panel interviews to hire an in-house director of communications and marketing
